2009
STATEWIDE
RALLY On the October long
weekend KMCC ran the annual Statewide Rally and
the 2009 ride was from Nuriootpa to Tintinara
which was home base for the 3 day event. The
riders were supposed to start riding at 9am but
somehow rally time always seems to kick in (rally
time is a calculation of the average combined
riders age dived by the nearest hour of the
correct start time) and
it was about 9.30am before the riders hit the
road. With a persistent drizzle the bikes &
riders started from the car park behind the
Nuriootpa Institute followed by the support
crews, although by a different route. Somehow
after about 8 km paul Wright 'Smithy' got himself misplaced
and was heading back to Angaston, after a reset
of his radar he found his way back to the pack.
Heading to Eden Valley the riders were diverted
from the roads through Dick Evan’s property, a scenic
route through the ranges with the local roos
wanting to join the fun. The drizzly rain and
fogging glasses were to be the cause for what
was now Smithy’s second get off, this time his
effort was an excursion over the bars in one of
the many creek crossings on the property. After
destroying the Speedo and Jim Hazeldine’s map
reader, Smithy picked up the bike and continued
on, advising Jim later the map reader was not up
to the Smithsonian ANCAP
crash test. Jim then informed Smithy of the
sentimental value the map reader held and that
the multifunction lunch box/map reader was given
to Jim from 2 guys called Bourke and Wills who
were passing through many years ago. Not far
out of Cambrai, Smithy’s partner in crime,
Andrew Earl, thought he would show a few of the
riders how a 410 Husky can power slide, and
slide it did. Analysis from the other riders who
were fortunate to witness the spectacle, said
“Andrew you were in the dismount position when
you should have been in the pose position”.
|
|

The riders then
arrived at the Cambrai property of Mark Schirmer, Mark & son
Ashley led the way through the sand & trees.
Smithy had increased his crash tally by the end
of the property, but all the riders came out
with smiling faces having enjoyed the ride.
Mannum was the destination for refuel and after
more delays became a stop for lunch. Brothers
Damien and Justin Nash were giving the old Yamaha 650
twin sidecar a work out before it threw the
chain, breaking off the snail cam adjusting lug
in the process. A quick patch up job was applied
but a flooding carbie saw the sidecar go on the
trailer and head to Karoonda to dismantle and
clean the offending part. With bikes refuelled
and riders fed they continued over the ferry for
the navigation part of the ride. The riders were
sent off in pairs at 2 minute intervals riding
all dirt roads and tracks to Wynarka then onto
Karoonda via tracks by the railway line. Here
the bikes refuelled and Damo, with the help of
his travelling mechanic, dad (Dave), had the old
Yamaha running again on 2 cylinders, most others
only had 1 to start with. The riders were
dispatched at 2 minute intervals again and
headed to Peake via tracks and dirt roads with
trees rocks and sand. At Peake, Andrew Earl
decided that he was in too much pain from his
shoulder injury (a result of his earlier lay
down) and withdrew from further riding. Chris
Clark and Lachlan Greenhalgh (Buttlock Racing)
had a flat rear tyre on their sidecar, so their
machine too became a trailer queen, Butts hopped
on the Earls Husky for the ride to Tintinara.
The rest of the bikes refuelled and riders
swapped stories. With all the delays along the
way the riders were behind schedule and were
redirected to Tintinara via a sand track.
Darkness had fallen during this last leg of the
Tintinara raid with suicidal birds and rabbits
keeping the riders and support crew alert,
finally arriving in at the destination about
730pm and half an hour ahead of the support crew. |

|
|

With all riders
accounted for and booked into the Tinty
Motel/Caravan Park the social side was underway
with a late tea around the camp fire. Relaxing drinks and
stories late into the night made the
time pass quick enough, but the realization of
loosing an hours sleep the next morning due to
the start of
daylight saving was the party breaker. After a slow start
Sunday morning, the guys rode the tracks through
trees and along side the railway line via
Coonalpyn to David Heinrich’s property for a fun
day. On arrival stories unfolded of speeding
trains, being held up by a kangaroo and lots of
sand, trees & whoops. One of the riders came
across Smithy stopped on a sand hill,
explaining he’d spotted a $2 coin in
the sand and stopped to pick it up, and that his
bike was lying down because the side stand was
useless in the sand. Jim set up gymkhana events
with the help of some riders which weren’t eager
to get going, but once underway they had fun.
After a variety of fun oriented events, David
Heinrich, the land owner, took most riders for a
follow the leader ride through his property on
his enduro tracks, etc. Thanks David for the use
of your property, I think all had a ball. After
packing up we headed back to camp. Thanks David
Stone for riding the 2 days, David had to leave
us as he had business commitments to go to, also
thanks to Sandra for coming all the way to
Tintinara and picking him up. |

All showered and in
our glad rags we headed for the Tintinara Hotel,
run by a lovely and obliging older couple who
opened the dining room especially for the Rally
and rewarded us with a great meal. The jokes
were now coming in thick and fast with Maria
Caust in
tears from too much laughing. All joined in with
the organised games, even the proprietor of the
pub joining in a round of pass the parcel. On
the walk back to camp Smithy pointed out some
marks in the car park then confirmed they were
where he’d found another $2 coin when arriving
back to Tintinara after the days ride. With a
fire going everyone once again joined in with
more games organised by Maria.
|
|
|
|
|
Monday morning came
too quickly and all were not eager to get going,
slowly packing up for the ride home. Rally time
once again kicked in for the start of the days
ride. Leaving Tintinara the riding began via
tracks on side of the railway line, then not
long into the ride Butts and Lochy rode through
a bog hole hit a tree then rolled the sidecar
with the only injury being their pride, although
the handle bars were customised extensively.
Damo and passenger battled on with a seized
sidecar shocker now avoiding the rougher ground.
All continued to Coonalpyn for a refuel, then
onto Ki Ki, Sherlock, Moorland and Murray Bridge
where a planned lunch break was had.
|
   |
|
|
With bikes and
riders refuelled they continued navigating their way back to Nuriootpa via
dirt roads, this time making good time and
arriving back earlier than normal, once again
ahead of the support crew. No doubt many
stories will come out of the 3 day 750km
adventure, but the ride of the day went to
Smithy even though he was considering a job
offer at the Sydney Crash Lab facility as an ANCAP
test pilot. The
other riders managed to talk him out of the
silly idea, after agreeing his riding skills had
improved dramatically by the final days ride,
and convinced him the double figure final crash
tally was almost forgotten. Well done Smithy! |

A big thanks goes to
the land owners for the use of their property,
the regular riders and the new ones
for another fantastic weekend. Thanks David and Liz Nash, Kirsty,
Maria, and Sara for doing back up, without you
all the riders would not be able to get their
clothes, fuel etc there. Thanks especially to
Liz and Kirsty for coming down Sunday morning
very early to join us. Stay tuned for
information about next years Statewide Rally,
but for now mark the October long weekend on the
calendar as a must do event.

ANNUAL GENERAL
MEETING
Shane Kraft was
elected back into the President’s chair of the
Keyneton MCC for 2010. In total this is Shane’s
8th term as president, which sees him
move up to equal 2nd on the Club’s
all time list of years as president, joining Joe
Doddridge (8 years), with only Geoff Warnest (10
years) ahead of him. In fact all of the 2009
executive were more than happy to re-nominate
for their positions, and the members felt the
same, voting them back into their positions. As
such, returning as vice president is Darren
Heidenreich, with the secretary, for a fifth
year is Andrew Warnest, as well as Chris Clark
and Jim Haseldine in the assistant and
competition secretaries roles. Chris Caust
and Andrew Warnest share the publicity officer
role, also for a 4th year and Matt
Neldner breaks Ken Warnest’s record of seven
straight years as treasurer in 2009.
Congratulations Matt on year number 8 as
treasurer, one more than Ken and Peter Menzel,
who also had 7 years, although not consecutive.
Matt Rosenzweig, fresh from his Clubperson of
the Year Award also continues on in the Club
Captain’s position. The one new face to
the executive for 2009 is James Rowe, who takes
over the Social Secretaries role from Paul
‘Smithy’ Wright. Smithy decided he needed a rest
for a while so he can go and crash his new bike
a few times and James was more than keen to step
into the role. We welcome James to the position.

CLUB PERSON OF
THE YEAR
This years Club
Person of the Year Award went to Matt
Rosenzweig, after a year of brilliant work
setting up and running the 6 Club events held in
2009. With an average entry list of almost 60
bikes per event, with a constant flow of new and
excited young riders at every event, as well as
very happy parents at the professional way all
the events were run, it’s hats off to Matt and
his team. Adding Moto Trials sections at 4
of the events also gave the young ‘guns’ in the
Club pause for thought when they realised that
it wasn’t as easy as it looked, and also drew
high praise from many people present. Matt
also took it upon himself to hunt down someone
to make the traditional style club jumpers. For
the older members in the Club this was an
important thing, and with the Club having it’s
60th anniversary in 2010 the timing
couldn’t have been better. Congratulations Matt, from
the Keyneton MCC.

JUNIOR CLUB
CHAMPION
The Junior Club
Champion Award for 2009 went to the 2009 South
Australian Off Road Series Junior Champion in
Dan McKenzie. Dan had a standout year in 2009,
winning all but the first round of the SAORC in
a dominant display. Also having a professional
approach and immaculate presentation of both,
himself and his machine make Dan a standout at
every event he rides.
Although riding
in open competition Dan also rode the KMCC Club
days for the extra practise and also found the
time to ride and win the Gawler MCC Club Series
in 2009. Congratulations to Dan from all
in the KMCC, a star on the rise and a young
rider the KMCC is proud to have as a member.

DENNIS WEICHERT
TROPHY
Winning the Dennis
Weichert Trophy for the most promising novice
rider in the Club was Alex Saint. Alex had a
stand out first year winning the Rookie of the
Year in the Reliability Trials Series, winning
his class in the series, cracking the top ten at
some events, as well as teaming up with Sean
Throup and Dan Plowman to win the Club Team
Award in the 24 Hour, in the process breaking
the Gawler MCC’s hold on the award. Alex was
also a late entry into the King of the
Endurocross and surprised many by making the
King of the Endurocross Main Event, in doing so
finishing in the top 15.
Congratulations Alex from all in the KMCC for a
stellar year.

MAX GRAETZ – KMCC LIFE MEMBER No 26
At the 2009 AGM
the Keyneton MCC bestowed it’s 26th
Life Membership, this time to a living
legend of motorcycling in South Australia,
Max Graetz. Max was first a member of the
KMCC in late 1969 when he joined up so he
could ride events as the Gawler MCC were
having trouble getting affiliated with the
ACU of SA. Up until the Gawler Club were
affiliated in 1971 Max rode for the KMCC.
After that, as M ax
had the Gawler MCC running through his veins
the KMCC lost a member, but not a friend.
In the 40 years since then Max has always
been a friend to the KMCC, giving his time
willingly at all KMCC events, whether it be
a reliability trial or a moto trial, or any
other event where help was needed. At any
social function the Club has had Max has
usually been the first one to arrive, and
nearly the last to leave. At the 50th
Anniversary celebrations in 2000 Max gave a
passionate speech about how much the KMCC
still meant to him.
Returning to the
Club in 2007, and now in his 80’s Max has
slowed down, a bit, but the fire and passion
for the sport and the Club still burns
bright and it was voted in unanimously that
Max should be awarded the KMCC”s highest
honour for his 40 years of work and support
for the KMCC. This now goes alongside his
Life Memberships to, both the Gawler MCC and
Motorcycling SA.
It was with genuine surprise and delight
that Max accepted the honour and for
possibly the first time in the KMCC
clubrooms Max was speechless, well, for a
short time.

SA WOMEN’S CUP &
DIENER/HOLMES SIDECAR TROPHY
The
Keyneton MCC ran the inaugural SA Women’s Cup and
Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy Moto Trial on September 12
& 13, on Phil Martin’s property at Eden Valley in hot,
dry and windy conditions, a stark contrast to the lead
up weather of wet and rainy! The KMCC would like to
thank all who helped with the set up of the event, the
section setters, the caterers, the officials, the land
owner, Phil Martin, and the observers who gave up their
Sunday morning so the riders could ride all day!
SA Women’s Cup.
|
After the success of the Australian Women’s
Cup, which has run for the last 8 years in
Canberra the KMCC decided to add another
women’s event to the Moto Trials calendar.
The original Women’s Cup had 8 entrants and
this year in SA we had 7 girls riding and 1
officiating (Race Sec), and all enjoyed the
weekend, or said they did! Flying in from
Queensland was Angela Sophios, and she had a
tough weekend riding Masters, on a strange
bike, but she toughed it out and very
deservedly took out the Masters Class and
the overall. Seems north QLD don't set
sections the same as us and we also have
heaps of moss rocks, which are a lot
different to QLD rocks! Saturdays hot and
dry conditions also took its toll a bit as
Angela suffered a lot of cramping - SA's
weather, like our rocks, being very
different to north QLD. Having said that it
was fantastic that she made the journey
down, and trials is definitely better with
Angela in it, and we all hope to see her
back in SA soon. Elyse Arnold and Tylor
Hogan continued their season long tussle and
had a close battle on day 1 in the Novice
Class, but on day 2 Elyse had a pearler and
won comfortably. Seems riding with the
boyfriend has helped as he has just started
riding and she doesn't want to get beaten by
him! Elyse also complimented the KMCC for
running a women’s event in SA and said that
it was great that there is now another
Women's Cup, especially for 'poor' Uni
students that can't get to Canberra.
Sharon Warnest was the only other girl on an
open licence, and was a rookie to Moto Trials.
On Saturday she really struggled at the start,
with a few crashes really denting her
confidence, but then she got a lot of help,
advice and encouragement from everybody and by
the end of day 1 was looking quite good, it’s
not every rookie that gets her own minder, right
Krafty! On day 2 she rode brilliantly to only
finish about 5 points behind Tylor for the day.

Queensland to win the Masters Women's Class and
become the, inaugrial and overall SA Women's Cup
winner. |

|
Robyn Evans was the other senior rookie, but
rode on a recreational licence and had an
absolute ball on an old TY175. The improvement
over the 2 days was there for all to see and she
was literally jumping out of her skin at
presentation!
The Women’s Cup also saw 2 juniors have a ride,
both on recreational licences, Heather Button &
Claire Neal. Heather rode a Pee Wee 80 and
showed enough to suggest that she could do very
well in trials, as did Claire Neal who was
riding a Gas Gas 50. Hopefully these 2 will be
regular competitors next year, as might Sharon
who is talking about buying a bike after
borrowing one for the weekend.
The Club also would like to thank Barbara
Greenhalgh (nee Holmes) for presenting the
trophies to the riders. Barb, not only a former
KMCC member, became the first woman to finish
the 24 Hour Trial, twice, as a sidecar passenger
in the 1970’s. |

Riding her first
ever event at the SA Women's Cup was Robyn

and the Trials des Nations, so the very best
female riders in Australia can attend. Word has
already leaked out of Queensland that Angela
will return to defend her title in 2010, but
this time will be bringing a posse with her to
try and take all the trophies back to banana
country. |

Diener/Holmes Sidecar
Trophy.
The Diener/Holmes Sidecar
Trophy, being run to celebrate the fantastic
careers of Trevor Diener & Philip Holmes, 7
times Australian Champions and 10 time SA
Champions as a team in moto trials,
attracted only 4 entrants this year, with
interstate teams caught between the
Australian & Victorian Championships and
SA’s top riders either retired, getting
married or on a sabbatical, it was left to
the young guns to fight out the inaugural
award.Chris Clark gave himself every chance
when his regular passenger pulled out with a
crook back and he enlisted the services of
Stuart Gerhardy, perhaps the finest
passenger SA has produced.
Day 1 saw Chris & Stewy
build up a commanding lead over the chasing
trio as Stewy shared his 20+ years of
experience, with Chris gaining in confidence
lap by lap and they ended the day with a 21
point lead over the second placed team of
Alex Turner & Paul Wright. Alex & Paul were
also having a brilliant ride and over the
last 2 laps they were only a point behind,
on each lap.
3rd place was being held
by the Greenhalgh brothers, Duncan & Lachie,
with the newly crowned SA Champions
struggling a bit on the bigger hills on
their little 175 Yamaha. In fourth and in their
first ever moto trial, solo or sidecar, were
the Throup brothers, Sean & Nick. Having
very quickly developed a healthy respect for
trials sidecars, after rolling it about 10
minutes into their warm up, the young
brothers stuck at their task all day, coming
to grips more and more as the day went on
and event beating the established team of
the Greenhalgh’s on 2 laps! Day 2 dawned with Chris &
Stewy deciding to step up a level of
difficulty in the sections to give
themselves a challenge. With the other teams
staying as they were on day 1 it would be
interesting to see if they could keep the
chasing pack at bay. Knowing that Chris &
Stewy had opened the door somewhat gave the
2 chasing teams the boost they needed to
pull something out of the hat.

2nd Novice and 3rd
overall in the SA Women's Cup, Tyler Hogan
attacking the log section. |
|
|
After 4 laps of 10
sections the scorers added the tally to find
it was a 14 point win to the Turner/Wright
team over the Greenhalgh brothers. Just 2
points behind the Greenhalgh’s came Clark
/Gerhardy, dropping 16 points to the
Turner/Wright team, but holding on to their
overnight lead to run out winners of the
Diener/Holmes Sidecar Trophy by 5 points.Second was the team of
Alex Turner & Paul Wright, with the
Greenhalgh brothers 3rd. The
Throup boys only rode Saturday due to
previous commitments, but vowed to come back
and ride a sidecar again.
With the top teams
missing, while it would have been good to
see them riding, it did give the next
generation of trials sidecar riders the
chance to shine. The Club would also like
to thank Wendy Holmes for presenting the
trophies and representing Trevor & Phil who
were unable to attend due to previous
commitments. As with the Women’s Cup, the
Club is already planning to make 2010 bigger
and better, and is looking at a more
suitable date to avoid a clash with the
Australian Championships and the various
state championships to enable all the
interstate teams to attend.
The other
grades.
SA’s only
Expert rider, Adrian Harry had a ride over the weekend,
as well as taking time out on Saturday morning to coach
some of SA’s best young talent. Jarrod Barwick won A
Grade, coming back from a day 1 challenge from Grant
Stephen to overall him on day 2. Joel Cramond was last
man standing in B Grade after Mitch Opie took a tumble
on day 1 and Steve Fraser not returning for day 2 due to
previous commitments.
C Grade saw a KMCC 1-2 with
Bradley Hunter, in his first senior ride, streaking the
field, with Kevin Steinert coming home second. Mark Opie
took out the Masters Class from Greg Cramond, with KMCC
member Chris Holmes winning a tight tussle in Veterans
from Scott Baxendale and Victorian Bracey Cooke.
The Clubperson Class was
convincingly won by Steve Neal from the KMCC’s Todd
Knight, with the evergreen Joe Tarabini 3rd.
Juniors was taken out by Connor Hogan from Dean
Baxendale & Lloyd Button.
Special mention must go to a
number of Junior B riders on the day who were riding for
the first time, on recreational licences, and had an
absolute ball over the 2 days. KMCC youngsters Tyson
Fechner & Cameron Gerhardy, as well as the AJS MTC’s
Haydon Barwick rode all the sections on Pee Wee 50
Yamahas and showed themselves to be potential champions
of the future, as there were some sections thought not
to suit the little Pee Wees, but the 3 boys proved all
wrong and managed to get through, although sometimes
with a bit of help from Mum & Dad. |

Riding his
first ever moto trial on the weekend was

first ride was Cameron Gerhardy, being
closely watched, and coached, here by mum,
Mandy.

KEYNETON & MORGAN MCC INTERCLUB RIDE DAY
Keyneton and Morgan Motor Cycle Clubs
combined for a ride day at Sedan on Sunday. The weather
was clear and crisp on arrival at the track and the sun
shone all day on the 70 plus riders. Three circuits were
available to riders who rotated every 15 minutes, except
for the young juniors whose track was available and in
constant use all day. Their little track consisted of a
couple of small jumps, bumps, left and right hand turns,
which kept many entertained until either their tummies
or tanks needed refuelling.
The larger tracks were mostly scrubby
natural terrain which included a lot of rocks. Although
the district had received recent rain, it wasn’t enough
to keep the dust down, especially when the big sidecars
ripped around the paddocks. Six junior outfits took on
the challenge of the Enduro style conditions and enjoyed
the change from the motocross tracks they are more
familiar with.

Both senior and junior solos classes had
good numbers and enjoyed the well marked circuits for
this combined fun day. Keyneton Club hosted the event by
organising the property, officials and the well stocked
catering van on the day. Fortunately the St John
volunteers were able to relax due to the incident free
event. Thanks in particular to the land owners and
everyone who helped in any way.

KEYNETON MCC WIN 2008 ‘MSA CLUB OF THE YEAR’ AWARD
At the last General Meeting, on May 26th,
Rob Baumann, the General Manager of Motorcycling SA was
in attendance ‘to see how the club was running’, or so
we all thought. At the end of the meeting Rob was
introduced to the members present and instead of
commenting on the Club he told of the real reason for
him returning to his old Club.
 |
|
It was with great surprise that
he asked the President, Shane Kraft, to accept
on the Club’s behalf, the MSA Club of the Year
Award for 2008. It was accepted by a stunned
President, who responded by saying that,
although it was a great honour, he felt that the
2008 President in Darren Heidenreich should be
the person accepting the award. |
|
|
Congratulations do go to all Club members
who have made the Club as well respected as what it is
in motorcycling in SA, and is also fine reward for all
of the work done by members at many events and meetings
in 2008. And after 2007, when the Club finished as
runner up in the same award, it is also good to see the
Club not rest on any laurels and keep on improving its
standards. Well done to all in the
Keyneton MCC.
2008 MSA OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR
Rob then pulled another rabbit out of the hat as he
produced another award to present. This one was for the
MSA Official of the Year for 2008, and it was awarded to
the hard working Jim Haseldine. Jim had a year where he
did not miss a Keyneton run event, whether they be open
events or closed to club, as well as helping out at
every other reliability trial during the year, selected
rounds of the SA Off Road Series and the ASA Sidecar
Spectacular at Naracoorte. The total number of events
that Jim was an official at in 2008 numbered 21 events.
Jim also took over the running of some of the Keyneton
Club events due to the Club Captain being absent with
work commitments during the year, meaning that if Jim
hadn’t stepped into the breach these events may not have
happened. At these club days he also made himself
available for coaching any of the riders who felt they
needed guidance during the day, and after riding had
finished.
At the Mike Connors Reliability Trial he was on duty for
well over 14 hours, as he was Chief Scrutineer in the
morning, was pit marshall during the day and then did
final machine examination at the finish! Jim has also
helped out at every other reliability trial in 2008,
with SAPMAC’s Di Nicholas stating at the presentation
night that their event wouldn’t have run without Jim’s
involvement. Upon hearing of this nomination Di wanted
to make it public that she seconded the nomination on
behalf of the SAPMAC club. The Statewide Rally was once
again held in 2008 and if not for Jim’s passion for the
event it is doubtful if the event would still be
running.
Many
members and friends of the KMCC would not miss this
event. Jim has also just been returned in as the KMCC’s
Competition Secretary for a third year, this being his 8th
year in total on the KMCC Executive. A very worthy
winner of the award, and congratulations to Jim, from
the Keyneton MCC.
2008
FRANK FRANKLIN AWARD
Topping off the awards, as Rob suggested, was the
‘biggie’, and the highest annual award that an
individual can be awarded in SA, without throwing a leg
over a bike. The Frank Franklin Trophy is awarded for an
outstanding contribution to motorcycle sport in South
Australia, which in 2008 went to the Keyneton MCC’s hard
working Social Secretary, Paul ‘Smithy’ Wright.
The Keyneton Motorcycle Club nominated ‘Smithy’ to be
considered for the 2008 Frank Franklin Trophy, for
exceptional services to motorcycle sport in 2008, after
an incredible 12 months of work for the club that was
rewarded with him being awarded the Senior Clubperson of
the Year Award at the October Annual General Meeting.
2008 had seen Paul become an indispensable cog in the
machinery that made the Keyneton Motorcycle Club run.
During this time there had been only one event, whether
it be open, club or social that Paul has missed and this
was due to a death in his family.
The 30th Anniversary Mike
Connors Reliability Trial was the pinnacle and saw Paul
lead a team of only 7 people in a catering marathon that
started at 7.00am and only ended over 14 hours later, at
about 9.30pm, with Paul spending almost all of that time
standing over a BBQ. With a record entry of 150 bikes,
plus many specially invited guests and increased
spectators due to the special anniversary, it was a
mighty effort. In the lead up to the event Paul spent
many hours organising and collecting all the necessary
supplies and even found time to help mark out a couple
of sections of the course. The day after the event saw
Paul back out at the clubrooms leading a cleanup that
also included the property next door that was used for
Main Control, the pits and the car park. Paul has always
made himself available to the Club, even working around
a family crisis, has always promoted motorcycling in a
positive way, and, has, through his personality and hard
work, increased numbers at meetings and events –
attributes to what Frank Franklin himself subscribed.
Well done Smithy, and, as young Nick Throup says,
where’s the food?
BRADLEY HUNTER – RISING STAR NOMINEE
The MSA Rising Star Award is an award where only the
winner is announced and this year’s winner was Arthur
Sissis, who won Australian Championships in speedway.
The Keyneton MCC had nominated Bradley Hunter for his
stellar year in moto trials, which included winning the
Star Award and finishing second in the SA Championships.
Bradley also spent a lot of time off of the bike,
spending many hours helping set out the Club’s two Moto
Trials and other club events as well, which resulted in
him being awarded the KMCC Junior Club person of the
Year Award.
Unofficially it was suggested that
Bradley had finished third in the voting, behind Arthur
& Rhyce Ahola, another Australian Championship
placegetter. Well done Bradley, in finishing just behind
2 nationally places SA riders.

MOUNTAIN MAN MOTO TRIAL
Finishing off May saw the Club run
it’s annual Mountain Man Moto Trial on Bruce Verrall’s
property at Eden Valley. With a number of senior members
unavailable to organise the event Chris Clark stepped
into the breach and organised his first ever event,
along with the help of other novices in the Club.
Getting a lot of help and advice from the senior
officials in the Club helped steer Christopher in the
right direction and on the day he, and his section
setting helpers had put together a challenging, but
safe, set of 8 sections for the 31 entries to have a
crack at. Missing, unfortunately due to illness, was
Bradley Hunter, the KMCC’s latest Moto Trials gun.
All who rode the event gave due praise to
Chris and his helpers, Alex Turner, Paul Wright and
Steve Frazer after the event, with the ‘almost crash of
the day’ coming from Paul when he lined up the observer
in a section and almost sent him rolling down the hill.
Don’t think we have ever seen Steiny move backwards so
fast!

2009 MIKE
CONNORS RELIABILITY TRIAL
May
23rd saw the KMCC run it’s annual Mike
Connors Reliability Trial at Sedan, with the start and
finish at the Sedan Oval. Perhaps the driest conditions
for any event in the last 30 years confronted the large
field of 140+ entries that lined up for the 9.30am
start. The Club had changed the rules slightly in
allowing riders to leave an unlimited amount of air
filters at fuel stops to try and counter the dry
conditions. Riders were glad of this with some using up
to 6 and 7 air filters over the 6 hour journey.
Hats
must go off to all the members of the Club who once
again worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of
the event. Special mentions should go to Sean
Heidenreich, who stepped up to the Clerk of Course
position for the first time, Maria Caust, for once again
running documents and then stepping into Race Secretary
mode once the bikes started, Jim Haseldine, not only for
running scrutineering, but also for getting the results
out so quick after the event, Sean and Chris Caust for
the pre-ride through the dust on the Friday, all the
control keepers and other officials on the day
(especially all the young members who put their hands
up) and a big special thank you to Ian & Amelia at the
Sedan Park for all of their hospitality and work over
the weekend, and, the landowners and people of Sedan for
opening up their land and town for us to come in and
dust them all out! Thanks also must go to the
Sedan Park Committee for running the catering and bar on
the day – not a bad word was said about anything that
Eric Henke cooked!
On the track, if you could see through
the dust, after many years of just missing out on a win,
Rowan Pumpa finally broke through to win the Mike
Connors Trophy for the first time. Rowan won 12 of 16
sections over second placed, and 5 time winner, Shane
Diener, in what was a close battle on the scoresheet and
on the track, as Rowan, one minute behind, chased Shane
all event to become the 18th name to be engraved on the
trophy in the 31 years of the award. 3rd was
Dale Newman, his best result in the Mike Connors,
followed by two of the Keyneton Club’s hottest young
talents, Nick Throup and Alex Saint 4th & 5th
Nick in his second year, and rookie Alex both recorded
best ever finishes in the Mike Connors.
2003
winner, Nathan Newell was 6th, with the other
KMCC member in the top 10 being Dan Plowman in 9th.

The sidecar class, chasing the
Weckert-Hollamby Trophy for the second time was
won by the brothers Long, Aaron & Trent,
grabbing the lead after the 3rd
section on lap 1 and never looking back to
record a maiden outfit win in the Keyneton
event. In keeping the Long tradition of success
going they recorded victory number 7 by the
family, with Trent also a solo winner. |

Winners in 2003 and runners up,
now for the last two years, and still sorting a
new bike was Dave Manuel with his KMCC passenger
Tony Tscharke, followed in third by Hector
Evans, with his new passenger Travis Busch. With
Tony swinging his way to second the next best
finishing KMCC sidecar team was in 5th
place in the form of James Rowe & Nigel Coe,
with the returning (after 20 odd years) Chris
Rogers and Mark (Fritz) Roesler in 6th,
and, Fred Weckert & Steve Urry in 8th.

Unluckiest outfit team on the day would
have had to have been youngsters Jarred Beckmann & Jared
Plush, who had their sump plug fall out just after the
first paddock, putting them out of the event after about
15 minutes!
Despite the dry conditions the Club
received many favourable comments about the event and
the way it was run, and marked to suit the conditions as
much as possible. Saying that the Club would like to
thank all the riders and passengers for their patience
and understanding on the day. As an organising Club you
always hope for the best conditions, but unfortunately,
you don’t always get it!

MARANANGA RIDE DAY
ANGASTON SHOW DEMO
2009
The Keyneton MCC kicked off 2009 with
a Moto Trials demonstration at the Angaston Show on
February 28th. A less than ideal position
meant that too few patrons at the show saw an excellent
demo put on by Club riders, even though they were
suffering a bit of summer ‘rustiness’. Old demo hands
Chris Clark, Kevin Steinert, Paul Wright and Andrew Earl
were joined by rookies, Bradley Hunter and Alex Turner
for the three demos.
Highlights of the day were Bradley
and Alex nailing the Club car for the first time, Chris
for nailing the car front to back, Steiny for getting
his old TY over the car and Paul’s elegant tumble off of
the pyramid!

Many thanks must go to Shane Kraft,
Chris & Maria Caust, John Turner, Andrew Warnest, Jim
Haseldine (for his car trailer) and the riding
team for their efforts on the day.
